Is Psychiatric Lyme on the rise?

Patients with persistent Lyme and tick-borne diseases may present with a number of neurological and psychiatric symptoms (Caliendo et al., 1995, Bransfield, 2007 & 2012). In a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, one-third of psychiatric patients showed signs of past infection with the Lyme spirochete (Hajek et al., 2002). In light of the alarming fact that Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in the United States, it is more important than ever for the public, doctors, and all mental health practitioners to understand the connection between infections, inflammation, and mental health disorders. Patients and families dealing with PANS are often more educated than their doctors about the psychiatric and behavioral complications that can occur when infections are untreated. This leaves us all wondering, how many people already suffering with mental health or neuropsychological symptoms have undiagnosed infections such as Lyme disease? And who will prevent psychiatric Lyme from rising alongside with the increased incidences of Lyme? In the next issue of LPTC newsletter, we will discuss prevention and treatment options.
