Lyme and PANS Newsletter – November 2017

"I wondered why somebody didn't do something. Then I realized that I am somebody."

-Willy Burgdorfer, discoverer of Lyme disease spirochetes

ILADS 2017

Every November, dedicated researchers, practitioners, and advocates from all over the world gather together to share their latest scientific and clinical advances at the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) meeting. This year, thousands of members, including nine practitioners from the Lyme and PANS Treatment Center, attended the four-day event in Boston. Stay tuned for highlights of the conference in every upcoming issue of LPTC's newsletter series.

Hot topics at ILADS 2017

  1. Dr. Brian Fallon provided some "Good news about Lyme Research." For example, did you know that scientists are working toward genetically engineering mice to produce Borrelia-killing antibodies?
  2. If you needed more evidence that psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders can be triggered by toxins, infections, and misdirected immune responses, this conference really delivered! What does this mean about the future treatment of "mental illnesses" and neurological disorders?
  3. Dr. Richard Horowitz presented research showing that his simple MSIDS questionnaire accurately predicted positive tick-borne disease 87% of the time in one study.
  4. Many immunological and neuropsychiatric functions rely on substances that are manufactured in the gastrointestinal tract. Understanding all the needs of the microbiome (more than probiotics) is key.
  5. Ten human rights violations against Lyme borreliosis patients are now on record at the United Nations. Violations include prevention of proper diagnosis and treatment for patients.
  6. What if you do not have a tick-borne disease and instead have mold toxicity? The similarities in clinical symptoms are striking.
